I Need A Vacation! Thursday, May 25 @ 10:04:27 CDT by staff (430 reads) | When warm weather hits, that is usually the first thing said. However,
with gas prices competing for the National Debt, where can you go and
get the biggest bang for your buck? And, what about taking time out
from work? Or, what can you do that is different? The word "vacation"
usually conjures up images of a favorite camping spot, a city, a beach
or the mountains. And Traffic -- lots and lots of traffic!
If you bring up the same topic in a group of science fiction/fantasy
fans you'll get an entirely different response. They will mention a
specific city and a convention with a strange name ending in the
syllable "con". These fans are fanatic about their favorites -- whether
it be a favorite author, a book, a movie or a minor character in the
tenth episode of some obscure B movie. They also feel the same way
about their favorite convention.
Most of these conventions take place over a non-holiday weekend
(Holidays usually involve a 4-day span starting with a Thursday or
Friday) in a city with a familiar name (i.e., Tampa Florida, Baltimore
Maryland, Richmond Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia). Hotel rates are kept
low because the fan committee can guarantee occupancy in a large block
of rooms, keeping both their fans and the hotel happy. Events are
generally planned around the clock to keep the coffee pots going and
the fans bleary-eyed. Many conventions incude activities for the
younger set.

Conventions: Is This A Party or What? Friday, August 26 @ 17:28:16 CDT by staff (1172 reads) | Klingons, vampires and wookies. Oh My! Bring up the word "vacation" to

Conventions: Fantasm 2004 Wednesday, March 17 @ 09:00:04 CST by skips (653 reads) | April 8-11 (Easter Weekend), 2004
Fantasm is a genre-based convention for fans of S/F, fantasy, horror, and erotica, as they are expressed in fiction, art, and games. Think of it as an entertaining social experience with a serious twist of decadence.
Fantasm is brought to you by several fans who, after attending cons for years, finally decided to throw a relaxacon of their own: Fantasm. At Fantasm, you will find guests: guests who will mingle with you, not guests who stay behind tables or guests who hide in their hotel rooms. You will find traditional programming (panels, guest speakers, a costume contest, and so on), but the primary focus is audience participation. Take the Con-coction Contest, for example: everyone is welcome to offer up a tasty beverage fo the judgement of the fans, and propaganda is strongly encouraged!
Fantasm is light-hearted and fun, but it is also an adult-oriented convention. Attendees with children are encouraged to leave them at home: many of the events are not suitable for children! You don't won't Junior falling into the punchbowl or gawking at the half-naked camgirls, do you, now?
Your suggestions and comments are always welcome, and the folks at Fantasm will be pleased if you take the time to tell them what you think.
